    On locally finite dimensional traces

    We resolve three open questions on approximation properties of traces on \C-algebras. We answer two questions raised by Nate Brown by showing that locally finite dimensional (LFD) traces form a convex set and that they are automatically uniformly LFD on locally reflexive \C-algebras. We prove that all the traces on the reduced \C-algebra Cr(Γ)C^*_r(\Gamma) of a discrete amenable ICC group Γ\Gamma are uniformly LFD, and conclude that Cr(Γ)C^*_r(\Gamma) is strong-NF in the sense of Blackadar-Kirchberg in this case.     Advancing Concrete Strength Prediction using Non-destructive Testing: Development and Verification of a Generalizable Model

    Accurate prediction of concrete compressive strength is imperative for investigating the in-situ concrete quality. To avoid destructive testing, developing reliable predictive models for concrete compressive strength using nondestructive tests (NDTs) is an active area of research. However, many of the developed models are dependent on calibration and/or concrete past history (e.g. mixture proportion, curing history, concrete mechanical properties, etc.), which reduces their utility for in-situ predictions. This paper develops predictive models for concrete compressive strength that are independent of concrete past history. To this end, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and rebound hammer (RH) tests were performed on 84 concrete cylindrical samples. Next, compressive strengths were determined using destructive testing on these cylinders, and predictive models were developed using NDT results. Furthermore, to ensure generalizability to new data, all models were tested on independent data collected from six different research papers. The results support combined usage of UPV and RH in a quadratic polynomial model structure. Therefore, the final model was proposed based on combining models from a threefold cross-validation of the experimental data. This model predicted the independent data with very good accuracy. Finally, a concrete quality classification table using combined RH and UPV is proposed based on a variant of machine learning k-means clustering algorithm

    A characterization of biflatness of Segal algebras based on a character

    Let A be a Banach algebra and φ be a character on A. In this paper, we give a necessary condition, called condition (W), for φ-biflatness of Banach algebra A as well as some hereditary properties. We also study the relation between left φ-amenability and condition (W). Moreover, we apply these results and characterize the φ-biflatness of abstract symmetric Segal algebras. In particular, we identify φ-biflatness of the Lebesgue-Fourier algebra A(G), where G is a unimodular locally compact group. These results describe a homological property for Segal algebras in the setting of biflatness based on character φ

    Gender Differential in the Association of Body Mass Index and Abdominal Obesity with Prehypertension and Hypertension in Iranian Adults

    *Objective:* The aim of this study was to determine the gender differential in the relationship of body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity with blood pressure (BP) and prevalence of hypertension (HTN) and prehypertension (Pre-HTN) among the adult population of Iran.

*Design:* A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted from December 2004 to February 2005. The selection was conducted by stratified probability cluster sampling through household family members in Iran.

*Subjects and Measurements:* Weight, height, waist circumference (WC), and systolic and diastolic BP of 45,082 men and 44,322 women aged 15-65 (mean 39.2) were measured. 

*Results:* The prevalence of HTN was 25.2% in men and 24.8% in women; and 50.1% of men and 39.1% of women were pre-hypertensive. WC and BMI were strongly associated with BP in both genders. Multivariate analysis revealed that both WC and BMI had the stronger association with HTN and Pre-HTN in men than women. Compared to men and women with normal weight, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval) of HTN was 5.75 (5.13, 6.44) for men and 4.29 (3.95, 4.66) for women with BMI ≥ 30. The multivariate OR of prevalence HTN in men with abdominal obesity compared with men without was 3.76 (3.41, 4.22) and in women, 2.92 (2.73, 3.13).

*Conclusion:* These data indicate that both BMI and WC had the stronger association with HTN and Pre-HTN in men than women.

    A survey of factors related to urine iodine levels in elementary school children, Kurdistan, Iran

    BACKGROUND: Iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) control program has two important factors: annual monitoring of urine iodine levels and controlling iodized salt consumed in the community. Preserving the iodine indexes in different level is important now too. This survey determined factors affecting median levels of urine iodine levels in students of Kurdistan Province (Iran). METHODS: This cross-sectional study selected 255 8-10-year-old students using cluster random sampling. Data was obtained by a questionnaire and urine analysis. The collected data was analyzed by Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests, Spearman correlation, and multiple regression. All analyses were performed using SPSS. RESULTS: The median urine iodine level of the studied school children was 9.7 μg/dl. There was no significant relation between urine iodine level and sex, place of residence (rural/urban areas), and household iodized salt intake (r = 0.188, P = 0.003). Overall, 119 families (46.7%) did not appropriately protect their iodized salt. The amount of iodine in salt and the condition in which salt is kept had relationships with children’s urine iodine levels. CONCLUSION: Low median level of urine iodine in students, low household iodized salt, and high use of salt with lesser iodine than the standard value showed that the IDD program in Kurdistan Province has not been successful. Therefore, there is a risk for increased prevalence of Goiter in the region. We recommend interventional programs to improve the current status in the province. KEYWORDS: Goiter, Urine Iodine, Ira

    Topical latanoprost does not cause macular thickening after uncomplicated cataract surgery.

    PurposeTo explore changes in central macular thickness (CMT) after a two-month period of glaucoma therapy with topical latanoprost after uneventful phacoemulsification.MethodsForty-one eyes of 31 patients with primary open angle or pseudoexfoliative glaucoma who required glaucoma medications after cataract surgery were prospectively enrolled. All eyes had undergone uneventful phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation at least 4 months before initiation of latanoprost. After a complete ophthalmic examination, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and fluorescein angiography (FA) were performed at baseline before starting latanoprost. All eyes received latanoprost for 2 months, and clinical examinations were repeated one and two months afterwards; OCT and FA were repeated after 2 months. Outcome measures were CMT and loss of more than 2 lines of best corrected visual acuity (BCVA).ResultsMean patient age was 71.6±7.8 years. Intraocular pressure decreased from 21.5±3.4 mmHg to 14.4±2.6 mmHg (p<0.001) at 2 months. None of the eyes developed reduction of BCVA exceeding 2 lines, or angiographic cystoid macular edema (CME). Likewise no significant change was noted in CMT (249.9±29.8 vs 248.8±30.7µm), average macular thickness (274.5±15.0 vs 273.8±17.0µm), or macular volume (9.6±1.0 vs 9.6±1.1µm2) after treatment as compared to baseline (P>0.05 for all comparisons).ConclusionTopical use of latanoprost later than 4 months after uncomplicated cataract surgery does not seem to predispose to increased macular thickness or CME and may safely be used in this setting
